Iain Dowie's side seemed to have been suffering from a hang over following their Worthington Cup third round victory at Premiership side West Ham on Wednesday.
Two goals in the first seven minutes from Ian Stonebridge and David Friio look to have put Paul Sturrock's side on their way to the three points.
However, a David Eyres penalty with sixteen minutes to go set up Wayne Andrews to equalise two minutes later as both sides shared the spoils at Home Park.
Cardiff City stay level on points with Oldham following a 3-2 defeat at struggling Barnsley.
Tykes captain Chris Morgan scored twice, including the winner four minutes after the hour mark as the Oakwell side earned a moral-boosting win. Rory Fallon scored the other goal for Barnsley.
Robert Earnshaw's brace was not enough as the South Yorkshire side took the points on the day.
Bristol City saw their six-match winning streak in the league end at Colchester United, after twice being pulled back to draw 2-2 at Layer Road.
Lee Peacock's two goals for The Robins were cancelled out thanks to second half goals by Thomas Pinault and Bobby Bowry.
Crewe Alexandra are fifth after a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Gresty Road, with Wally Downes' side finishing the match with nine men.
Robert Hulse got both goals for The Alex while Ibrahima Sonko replied for The Bees in the second half.
Brentford had Scott Marshall and Jamie Fullarton both sent off in the match for serious fouls.
QPR are sixth despite a 1-0 home defeat to Northampton Town. Paul Trollope scored the winner for Kevan Broadhurst's side at Loftus Road.
Barry Fry's Peterborough United got a late winner from Andy Clarke to beat Chesterfield 1-0 at London Road but stay in the relegation zone, despite the victory.
Joe Kinnear's Luton Town had to settle for a point following a 0-0 draw against Port Vale at Kenilworth Road.
Tranmere Rovers came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at Swindon Town, despite going behind to a Sam Parkin goal two minutes into the match.
However, Gary Jones equalised with ten minutes to go earn Rovers a point in Wiltshire.
Huddersfield Town had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Wycombe Wanderers at the McAlpine Stadium. The Chairboys had Danny Senda sent off for violent conduct.
Stockport County came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at home to struggling Cheltenham Town.
Julian Alsop gave The Robins the lead just after the half-hour mark, but Ben Burgess equalised five minutes before the break as both sides shared the points at Edgeley Park.
Bottom club Mansfield Town got a last-minute Iyseden Christie goal to earn a 2-2 draw at Nottinghamshire rivals Notts County.
Liam Lawrence gave The Stags a 1-0 half-time lead before The Magpies scored twice in the second half through Richard Liburd and Darren Caskey.
However in injury time, Christie equalised to give Stuart Watkiss' side a valuable point as they look to try and climb out off the foot of the table.
