Following a 0-0 first half, the home side took the lead as on-loan Zeshan Rehman made it 1-0 eight minutes after the break and the scoreline was doubled when Leon Knight struck two minutes after that.
Caretaker boss Bob Booker (pictured) saw his Brighton squad cap their victory as Knight scored his second goal from the penalty spot.
Port Vale remain third despite Oldham Athletic scoring two goals from Chris Killen and David Eyres to record an excellent 2-1 victory in the early Saturday kick-off.
Marc Bridge-Wilkinson had equalised with a penalty after Stephen McPhee was brought down but Eyres's free-kick strike made it nine matches unbeaten for Iain Dowie's side.
Plymouth Argyle moved to fifth in the table following a 6-0 thrashing of Tranmere Rovers at Home Park.
Six different goalscorers made the scoresheet for Paul Sturrock's side - with David Friio, Paul Wotton, Peter Gilbert, Marino Keith, Micky Evans and David Norris all finding the net for the home side.
Luton Town recorded another good win at home, as they disposed of Wycombe Wanderers 3-1 at Kenilworth Road.
Steve Brown had put The Chairboys in front from the penalty spot four minutes after the break but a Gary McSheffrey brace and Russell Perrett gave Mike Newell's side all three points in Bedfordshire.
Stockport County came from a goal down at Swindon Town to win 2-1 at The County Ground.
Tommy Mooney put The Robins in front at the break but Stuart Barlow equalised six minutes after half time and Aaron Wilbraham notched the winner with three minutes to go to give The Hatters an excellent away victory.
Steve Fletcher's second half strike at Notts County gave Bournemouth a 1-0 victory at Meadow Lane.
Colchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Blackpool at Layer Road - Wayne Andrews had put The U's in front after just two minutes but Scott Taylor earned The Seasiders a point with a second half equaliser.
Rushden & Diamonds defeated bottom club Chesterfield 2-1 at Nene Park, with all the goals coming in three first half minutes.
Barry Hunter put The Diamonds in front before Marvin Robinson equalised two minutes later but Rodney Jack restored the home side's lead a minute after that to take the three points for Brian Talbot's side.
