After a first half stalemate Plymouth took ten minutes into the second period to score through substitute Nathan Lowndes (pictured) and Paul Wotton added a second from the spot as they increased the gap between them and the rest of the pack.
QPR produced a second half display that proved too much for Wrexham at Loftus Road and moved themselves up into second place.
Clarke Carlisle put The R's in front on 67 minutes before Kevin McLeod sealed the win with the Londoners' second two minutes from time.
Brighton were successful on their travels with a 2-0 win over Chesterfield at Saltergate, to remain firmly in the play-off picture.
An uneventful first half was brought to life by defender Guy Butters on 49 minutes when he put The Seagulls in front and new signing from Stoke Chris Iwelumo made the game safe with his first goal for his new club seven minutes from time.
Luton looked to have done enough to earn a point against Port Vale at Vale Park until six minutes from time when Michael Cummins stole in to gift the home side all three points.
Hartlepool entertained the crowd at Victoria Park in a 2-2 draw with Stockport County.

Oldham and Barnsley each earned a point at Boundary Park thanks to a 1-1 result.
Paul Hart's men went into the break a goal to the good thanks to a goal from Daniel Nardiello but Paul Murray levelled on 53 minutes to gain the Latics a vital point.
Wycombe Wanderers remain 12 points adrift at the bottom although they did earn a creditable draw against Colchester at Layer Road.
Craig Fagan gave The U's an eighth minute lead but Michael Simpson cancelled that out with a goal on 38 minutes.
An Andy Edwards first half double helped Rushden & Diamonds to three points with a 2-1 win over Notts County at Nene Park.
Edwards struck on 12 and 36 minutes, with County's reply coming from Anthony Scully (62) as they remain in the bottom four.
Blackpool also kept Brentford in the relegation places as they came form a goal down at Bloomfield Road.
A Stephen Hunt penalty gave The Bees a first half lead but it was cancelled out within eighth minutes of the restart by Richard Wellens.
