Mike Newell's side are three points clear at the summit after fellow title contenders Hull City succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Oldham Athletic.
It was Torquay that took an early lead through Adebayo Akinfenwa at Plainmoor, but Luton took a 2-1 lead into the break - thanks to goals from Kevin Nicholls (23) and Peter Holmes (32).
The Hatters then extended their lead when Steve Howard bundled the ball home six minutes after the restart, having taken Torquay's net off its woodwork supports in the aftermath (pictured).
Rowan Vine then sealed the win in South Devon with a fine strike on 71 minutes while Torquay's day was summed up when Akinfenwa had a second half penalty stopped by Hatters goalkeeper Marlon Beresford.
Hull dropped to second after Chris Killen's scrambled goal midway through the second half gave Oldham a vital 1-0 win to boost their chances of avoiding relegation.
Doncaster Rovers are within three points of the play-off places after a fine 4-2 win at third place Tranmere Rovers.
Dave Penney's side took a two-goal lead inside the first five minutes through Michael McIndoe and Gregg Blundell before Eugene Dadi pulled a goal back on 11 minutes for Rovers.
Dadi, however, then put his side at a disadvantage when he was sent off for throwing a deliberate elbow on Doncaster's John Doolan.
Despite being a man short, Paul Hall pulled Tranmere level a minute before the break.
Donny, however, made the extra man count after the restart, as Ricky Ravenhill restored their lead on 52 minutes before Neil Roberts scored a fourth nine minutes from the end.
Hartlepool United were held to 2-2 draw by ten-man Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, with Keith Southern handing The Seasiders the lead from the penalty spot three minutes in.
The home side, however, then went a man short when Mark McGregor was sent off on 26 minutes for two bookable offences.
Adam Boyd then turned the match on its head with two goals in a minute just after McGregor's sending off.
But Colin Hendry's side earned a point when Peter Clarke made it 2-2 with eight minutes remaining.
Milton Keynes Dons boosted their chances of League One survival with a 1-0 win at Bournemouth.
The Cherries will rue that Garreth O'Connor's right foot penalty in the first half was brilliantly stopped by MK Dons goalkeeper Matthew Baker.
That allowed Gareth Edds to strike the winner for Danny Wilson's side with 17 minutes left, as Bournemouth missed the chance to further secure their place in the play-offs.
The result at Dean Court allowed Brentford to pull level on points with The Cherries after a goalless home draw with struggling Peterborough United.
Bradford City boosted their chances of reaching the play-offs with a 3-1 home win over bottom club Stockport County.
Two goals inside the first five minutes from Andy Cooke and Steven Schumacher sent The Bantams on their way, despite Adam Le Fondre pulling a goal back five minutes before half time.
Dean Windass made sure of victory for the West Yorkshire club with a third goal just after the hour mark.
Barnsley took all three points late on against Walsall with a 3-2 victory at Oakwell.
Goals from Antony Kay (37) and Daniel Nardiello (48) gave The Tykes a two-goal lead, but Walsall pulled level through new loan signing Julian Joachim (51) and Jorge Leitao (53).
Barnsley, however, took the win with ten minutes left when on-loan Michael Chopra scored the winner for the South Yorkshire club.
Finally, a Marino Keith goal with a quarter of an hour remaining gave Colchester United a 1-0 win over Chesterfield at Layer Road.
