Huddersfield were knocked off the top by Southend after losing 4-3 to Chesterfield.Huddersfield were knocked off the top of League One after losing a thriller 4-3 at Saltergate, as Southend drew with Barnsley.
Chesterfield were always going to prove tough opponents for the Yorkshire club, and after Wayne Allison fired the home side in front after 11 minutes, and further strikes by Paul Hall (30) and Colin Larkin (45) handed them a healthy 3-0 lead at the break, it seemed as though a thrashing was on the cards.
The Terriers fought back in the second half though, Mark Hudson pulling a goal back (80), before Shane Nicholson seemed to have killed off the tie with a converted spot kick (85). However, late goals from Jonathan Worthington and Andy Holdsworth almost sealed a dramatic comeback for Peter Jackson's side.
Southend leapfrogged Huddersfield, but only on goal difference after being pegged back to 1-1 by Barnsley. After a goalless first half, The Shrimpers broke the deadlock on the hour mark, Shaun Goater smashing in a penalty, but The Tykes grabbed a late equaliser.
Swansea had to fight hard for a 2-2 draw against Rotherham. Grant Leadbitter gave The Millers a surprise advantage (41), but League One top scorer Lee Trundle levelled for the Welshmen just a minute later, firing in his eleventh goal of the season.
The Swans stepped up a gear in the second period, and took the lead after 59 minutes, Marcus Bean with the crucial goal (59), only for Barry Conlon to cruelly deny them the chance of joining Huddersfield and Southend at the top with an injury time leveller.
Bottom placed Swindon somehow escaped from their game with Scunthorpe with a much needed point. The visitors went ahead after 35 minutes courtesy of Matthew Sparrow and when Rory Fallon was later sent off for Swindon, it seemed as though it would be a case of damage limitation. However, a Christian Roberts penalty (78) rescued a draw for the home side.
High-flying Brentford were held to a goalless draw by Blackpool. The Seasiders were reduced to ten men in the first half, Tommy Wright shown red for two bookable offences, but succeeded in frustrating their London rivals for the remainder of the game.
Port Vale picked up three points on their travels, coming away from Bournemouth with a 2-1 win. The Cherries took the lead after 23 minutes through Andrew Surman, but Port Vale equalised after 75 minutes through Michael Cummins, and Billy Paynter scored a late winner (86).
Bradford kept up their good form with a 1-0 win, an Andrew Cooke goal two minutes from time denying lowly Gillingham a point.
Two struggling clubs, Hartlepool and MK Dons, met at Victoria Park, with the home side coming from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory. The Dons started the brighter, and were rewarded by Izale McLeod's goal after 24 minutes, but Hartlepool levelled when Dean Lewington scored an own goal minutes after the resumption, and Lee Bullock scored the winner after 84 minutes.
Tranmere and Colchester played out a 0-0 draw at Prenton Park, a result doing neither side many favours.
Walsall managed to beat Doncaster 1-0 at the Bescot Stadium, Jorge Leitao with the only goal of the game.
Yeovil cruised to a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, Phil Jevons scoring a first half brace (6 and 26). Gary Megson's side were dealt a further blow before the interval, Gareth Taylor being dismissed for violent conduct, and Arron Davies added a late third (82)
Oldham enjoyed a fine 4-3 win at home to Bristol City. Mark Hughes opened the scoring after four minutes, and the lead was doubled by Richard Wellens (25).
Gary Johnson's side fought back after the interval, and pulled one back when Scott Brown found the back of the net (48), but Oldham restored their two goal advantage when Chris Porter struck (56). The visitors replied again when James Quinn made it 3-2 (79), but Oldham hit back to seal the points, Andy Liddell scoring three minutes from time. Scott Murray grabbed a stoppage time consolation, but there was no opportunity for an equaliser.
