Freddy Eastwood grabbed a hat-trick to keep Southend United top of the table.Southend stayed top of the table after beating struggling Bristol City thanks to a Freddy Eastwood hat-trick and Lee Trundle also grabbed a hat-trick to take Swansea up to second after thrashing Chesterfield at The Liberty Stadium.
Southend recorded their first win in three games thanks to Eastwood's treble. Eastwood's goals came on 25, 48 and 76 minutes and leave Bristol City in big trouble near the bottom of the table.
Swansea thrashed Chesterfield 5-1 to move them up to second in the table. Adebayo Akinfenwa opened the scoring for the Swans after 7 minutes before Trundle doubled the lead after 11 minutes. Steve Blatherwick got Chesterfield back in the game after 21 minutes only for Swansea to run away with it with further goals from Trundle (28, 72) and Owain Tudor-Jones (48).
Barnsley beat ten-men Walsall 2-1 at Oakwell thanks to a second half winner from Brian Howard (66). Walsall had equalised Paul Hayes (13) opener for Barnsley through Matt Fryatt (63) after Craig Pead had seen red in the 58th minute.
Scunthorpe got the better of a six goal thriller at Glanford Park as they moved into the play-off places after a 4-2 win over Oldham. Andy Liddell (17, 33) scored twice for Oldham in the first half but Scunthorpe took the points thanks to goals from Andy Butler (28), Andy Crosby (52) and Billy Sharp's (31, 56) 11th and 12th goals of the season.
Huddersfield slipped out of the automatic promotion spots after being held at home to Swindon. Swindon had taken the lead thanks to an Andy Gurney penalty after 40 minutes but Huddersfield equalised through Chris Brandon (54) in the second half.
Colchester snatched a 3-2 victory over Yeovil thanks to an injury time winner from Chris Iwelumo. Yeovil had taken the lead through Pablo Bastianini (32) but Iwelumo (43) equalised just before half time. Yeovil went ahead again through Matt Harrold on 51 minutes only for Cureton (68) to level again for Colchester before Iwelumo's winner.
Bournemouth recorded an impressive victory over fourth place Brentford thanks to goals from James Keene (26) and James Hayter (40).
Tranmere won for the first time since the end of August through goals from Steve Davis (41) and an injury time goal from Steve Jennings.
MK Dons equalised with 10 minutes to go through Malvin Kamara after Andy Monkhouse had put Rotherham ahead after 24 minutes to maintain their record of only losing two out of their last 22 at home.
Neil Harris (65) got the winner for Gillingham as they beat Blackpool 2-1. Keigan Parker (23) for Blackpool and Chris Hope (49) were the other scorers.
Nottingham Forest beat Bradford 1-0 and moved within two points of the play-off places after David Johnson (24) scored his 50th goal for the club.
Port Vale dropped out of the play-off places after crashing 2-1 at home to Harlepool. Eifion Williams gave Hartlepool the lead after 12 minutes but Michael Cummins equalised just before half time for Vale only for Thomas Butler to score on 64 to give Pool the points.
