Colchester went second whilst Brentford could only draw with Nottingham Forest.Colchester United moved into the automatic promotion spots after a 3-2 victory over Bristol City.
The home side had to come from behind to win after Scott Murray had opened the scoring inside two minutes however Gareth Williams's first goal for a year restored parity (27) before Neil Danns scored goals either side of half-time (45 & 61) to put the U's in command.
Marcus Stewart pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but it was too late to mount a comeback.
In the night's other game, Brentford and Nottingham Forest played out a 1-1 at Griffin Park.
Kris Commons's deflected free-kick put the visitors in front early before DJ Campbell equalised after 34 minutes.
There were no more goals, but plenty of controversy as the referee brandished two red cards.
Julian Bennett was sent off before the break for a second bookable offence before Martin Allen's complaints saw him sent to the stands in the final minutes over the game.
