Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal says his side are still outsiders for promotion this season, despite sitting inside the play-off places in the Championship.

Carvalhal took over at the start of this season after the sacking of Stuart Gray and has lost only seven of his 33 games in charge in all competitions.

Speaking on the FL72 Podcast, the Portuguese boss is remaining realistic about his side's chances between now and May.

"I follow what I said in the beginning in that we take it game by games and we are outsiders," Carvalhal said.

"We are doing well, we are in a good way and in the second half of the season. There are a lot of pains but the team are recovering now and I like a team who recovers.

"There are a few players like Sam Hutchinson, Lewis McGugan and Marco Matias who are coming back after being out and they will add fresh energy for a stronger second half of the season.

"We are focused in this moment on the Reading game and lets see what will happen in May."

With regards to the January transfer window, Carvalhal will not rush into panic signings in order to strengthen Wendesday's promotion chances.

Wednesday have been out of the top flight since 2000, but Carvalhal is concentrating more on securing deals for current loan players.

He added: "I think the more you do in July, the less you have to do in January or you start having problems.

"I am a coach that lives in an emotional environment and have emotional connections so you can do this if you don't move your team around too much and move too many players.

"This transfer window we're planning firstly [to] get the contracts in order for the players we have on loan and after this if we do something, then it will be a few things but not big changes [to] the team, I'm absolutely sure.
