A single strike just after half-time from Lloyd Owusu gave The Owls the lead and they must have thought it was enough to send them level at the top with Brighton until veteran hit-man Marco Gabbiadini spoiled the party.
The former Derby County striker ruined Turner's North-East return though as he hit the equaliser with just over five minutes remaining.
It was a bitter blow for The Hillsborough outfit, although both sides are still in the running to mount a serious challenge for promotion to Division One.
Bristol City were also denied a win at Ashton Gate against Peterborough United thanks to an even later goal from Richard Logan.
A strike from Brian Tinnion after 24 minutes gave Danny Wilson's men a lead to take into the interval.
Posh boss Barry Fry used all three substitutes in the second half as his side went in search of an equaliser, but Tinnion's effort looked to be turning out to be a winner until the last minute when Logan pounced to level matters and reward the visitors for their efforts.
