Brian Talbot has relieved his defensive headache with the signature of Guy Branston.Oldham boss Brian Talbot has relieved his defensive headache with the signature of Guy Branston.
The Latics have been hit with a spate of injuries to their backline in the past couple of months and have been forced to play a number of younger and less experienced players.
However, Talbot moved to sign Dutchman Stefan Stam in midweek and has now added Branston to the ranks at Boundary Park.
The tough tackling 26-year-old joins on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday until the end of next season and should provide the experienced cover Talbot is looking for.
Branston spurned the opportunity to sign for Peterborough, where he enjoyed a loan spell earlier in the season.
The former Rotherham stopper found opportunities scarce at The Owls following the appointment of Paul Sturrock but the player leaves with the blessing of his manager.
''We wish Guy all the best. He was very appreciative of his situation,'' Sturrock told the club's official website.
''He's the type of person who wants to play football in somebody's first team and he felt it was time he moved on."
Meanwhile, Wednesday will not be pursuing trialist Gianfranco Tome after Sturrock decided the player lacked the physical attributes to adjust to League One football.
