Craig Fagan's last-gasp penalty earned Hull a share of the spoils and denied Port Vale a shock win.
Port Vale got off to a dream start with Lee Matthews firing them in front after just 13 minutes, but Leon Cort drew Hull level on 33 minutes.
The visitors were gifted the lead back on 67 minutes when Damien Delaney put through his own net and it looked like being enough until Fagan struck from the spot in the final minute.
Tranmere missed the chance to close the gap on the top two after being held to a 2-2 draw by Chesterfield.
Steve Blatherwick gave Chesterfield the lead right on the stroke of half time, but Michael Jackson drew Tranmere level on 72 minutes.
Eugene Dadi fired Tranmere in front four minutes from time and it looked like earning Tranmere all three points until Carlos Logan popped up in the final minute to secure a draw for Chesterfield.
Sheffield Wednesday came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with Torquay at Hillsborough.
The visitors raced into a two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Adebayo Akinfenwa (25) and Stephen Woods (49).
Wednesday refused to lie down and pulled a goal back through Lee Bullen on 54 minutes and Graham Barrett marked his debut with the equaliser on the hour mark.
Oldham boosted their survival hopes with a priceless 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Walsall.
Luke Beckett netted the all-important winning goal for Oldham 18 minutes from the end.
