Paul Sturrock has revealed that John-Paul McGovern rejected a new contract.Sheffield Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock has revealed that John-Paul McGovern rejected a new contract at the start of the season.
With Leeds United reportedly hovering it had been expected that Sturrock would step-up his efforts to secure the services of last term's player of the season, but the Owls chief has claimed all contract talks have been shelved for the moment.
McGovern, a 25-year-old winger, is currently sidelined with a torn thigh muscle and Sturrock admits that he is reticent to re-sign any player who is not fully fit.
Sturrock is keen for the talented midfielder to remain at Hillsborough but for the moment is content to wait until he makes a return to first team action.
''It's not appropriate to discuss a new contract while a player is injured especially with Sheffield Wednesday's record over the past few years,'' Sturrock told the Yorkshire Post.
''I want JP to stay at the football club but it's up to him to play regularly and put up a case for negotiations.
''Contract talks are on the backburner. The important thing now is to get wins under our belt.''
Sturrock, meanwhile, has opted to offer a new contract to injured Owls goalkeeper David Lucas.
