Wednesday sign Algerian

Sheffield Wednesday signed former Crewe Alexandra defender Madjid Bougherra.

Sheffield Wednesday have signed former Crewe Alexandra defender Madjid Bougherra.

The Algerian international joins The Owls for an undisclosed fee from French Ligue 2 club Gueugnon, having signed a three-year deal at Hillsborough.

Bougherra enjoyed a solid campaign at Gresty Road, despite Crewe's relegation this past season but unlike his former team-mates, he will be playing Championship football next term for Paul Sturrock's side.

Bougherra only moved to England in January, but immediately caught the eye with a series of imposing performances for The Railwaymen.

Following his completed move on Friday, the 23-year-old expressed delight at the switch to the South Yorkshire club.

"I'm very happy to sign because it is a good team and a big team," Bougherra told Wednesday's official website.

"I want to go to The Premiership with the team for the supporters and the city because Sheffield Wednesday don't want to stay in The Championship.

"I'm very excited and want the supporters to say I'm a good signing."
