Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Yoann Folly has been ruled out for at least six weeks with a knee injury.
The 21-year-old hurt his knee during Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Luton and had to be substituted 11 minutes from time.
Owls boss Paul Sturrock has been impressed by the new signing's early performances, and is devastated to lose him.
"It's a huge blow. Yoann and Glenn Whelan have been exceptional as a pairing," Sturrock told the club's official website.
Sturrock will now be praying that the Frenchman's surgery, scheduled for this weekend, runs smoothly.
And he urged the rest of the Wednesday squad to raise their level to compensate for Folly's absence.
"It's an opportunity for whoever goes in there," he remarked. "We're just going to have to roll our sleeves up even more.
"I've been very proud of the players' attitude to all (our injury problems). Their response has been second to none.
"Tuesday was a huge kick in the teeth to us and they will have to respond again."
