Bristol City boss Keith Millen recognises that any potential discussions regarding Jordan Spence could be stalled by the current turmoil at West Ham.
The England Under 21 defender spent two months on loan at Ashton Gate before being recalled by the Hammers to play in their Premier League run-in.
Spence made his first start for the London club during the last-gasp defeat at Wigan on Saturday which saw them relegated.
Millen remains interested in Spence, but knows that the consequences of West Ham suffering the drop, including Avram Grant's sacking, could mean the Londoners have other priorities.
"Everything is up in the air at West Ham at the moment and with regards to Jordan, I don't know whether that is a good thing or a bad thing," Millen told City's official website.
"As I've said before, we are monitoring the situation and we would be interested in speaking to Jordan if there is a chance he will be available."
Any club looking to sign Spence would be required to pay a compensation fee as he is under the age of 24.
