The Bluebirds continued their fine run under Lennie Lawrence, stretching their unbeaten sequence to seven games after withstanding a late fightback from the visitors.
The hosts were 2-0 up within the first 20 minutes and appeared to have had the game sewn up at that early stage but they reckoned without the battling qualities of relegation-haunted Wrexham.
Defender Scott Young's third goal in four games put the hosts in front on 14 minutes and three minutes later Peter Thorne doubled the advantage.
Ten minutes before the interval Wrexham striker Craig Faulconbridge reduced the arrears with his first goal in eight games.
But two minutes after the break, Daniel Gabbidon restored Cardiff's cushion until Hector Sam's effort two minutes from time set up a nailbiting finish in South Wales.
