The 29-year-old put pen-to-paper on a short-term deal with The Bluebirds, after deciding that his future was not with former club Wimbledon.
Despite dropping to a side in Division Two, Ainsworth believes his move to South Wales will benefit him in landing a new club in the summer.
"I don't think leaving Wimbledon for Cardiff is a gamble," Ainsworth told The Western Mail.
"I know I'm dropping down a division but I honestly see this move as a forward step.
"The crowds at Cardiff are fabulous and the whole place is buzzing at the moment.
"This club has got massive potential and I want to be a part of that."
