Following a goalless first half, Brian Tinnion [pictured] opened the scoring from the penalty spot ten minutes after the break, after Cardiff's Danny Gabbidon was adjudged to have handled the ball in his own penalty area.
The Robins then doubled their lead when Scott Murray made a run down the right before crossing to find striker Christian Roberts, who slotted home to ensure three vital points for the home side.
The final stages saw both sides finish with ten men as Cardiff City's Gareth Ainsworth and Bristol City's Aaron Brown were both sent off for a fracas in the last minute.
Victory takes Bristol City to third in the table and virtually secures their place in the play-offs, with chances of catching second place Crewe Alexandra still very much alive with two matches remaining.
Defeat for Cardiff City keeps them five points behind Crewe and all but extinguishes their chances of catching The Railwaymen, even though they face Dario Gradi's men at Gresty Road on the last day of the season.
