The Gills boss is keen to find a hit-man following the £950,000 sale of Marlon King to First Division rivals Nottingham Forest last month.
Hessenthaler has been looking far and wide to find a new striker and Kitson may now become the Kent-based club's latest target.
The 23-year-old has caught the interest of fellow Division One sides Rotherham United and Cardiff City in recent months, though Cambridge have yet to receive a proper bid for the player.
With the Abbey Stadium club in need of funds to pay off debts this month, player-manager John Taylor may entertain the thought of selling his prized asset, should he receive a suitable offer.
Kitson, however, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and it remains to be seen if Hessenthaler will make a move for the striker before Kitson returns to match fitness.
The Gills may also be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper following the news that number one Jason Brown will be out for up to a month with an injury to his right thigh.
