Railwaymen's on-loan goalkeeper Ben Williams was the unlucky goalscorer, as The Bluebirds returned to winning ways on the road.
The visitors dominated the play by putting Williams under constant pressure with a series of corners in windy conditions that the Crewe keeper was able to deal with.
Cardiff's Robert Earnshaw had an overhead kick inside the box fly over the bar while Bluebirds keeper Martyn Margetson made two good saves in the space of two minutes from Dean Ashton and Chris McCready.
The South Wales outfit continued to dominate the match throughout but it needed some good fortune for Cardiff to take the lead mid-way through the second half.
On 70 minutes, Gary Croft's bullet of a strike came back off the woodwork and struck the unlucky Williams to inadvertently deflect into Crewe's goal for the only goal of the match.
The visitors held firm towards the final whistle, as Lennie Lawrence's side now sit mid-table in Division One following the win.
