Carlisle United have allowed Miguel Comminges to return to Cardiff City after opting against extending the defender's time at Brunton Park.
Comminges joined the Cumbrians last month on loan and his only appearance came in the FA Cup tie against Tamworth.
However, he has not done enough to stay with the League One club after Carlisle boss Greg Abbott confirmed he is trying to spend his transfer budget on permanent signings.
"It was good that we had him for a month and he has been absolutely terrific," Abbott told the club's official website. "He's a really good person and he has worked hard from the moment he got here.
"I spoke to him today and told him that we want to make permanent signings that we think are going to be better than what we already have here, and we didn't think that he was quite there at this moment in time.
"It's important for us that we stick to that aim of bringing in players that are going to improve things, and with the type of money that he was looking for we felt that we needed to see more.
"It would have become a financial burden for us had it not worked out, so we have had to shake hands and move on with this one.
"He accepted that decision really well and it is not going to put him off trying to do something with another club elsewhere."
