The 34-year-old Cardiff striker is expected to collect his 77th cap for Wales in Friday's Group A qualifier at home to Macedonia.
The principality also face a trip to Belgium next Tuesday but are currently propping up the group table having lost six of their eight games so far.
And Wales manager Coleman said: "Craig is approaching 80 caps so that's a good shift.
"We haven't got enough like that. We'd like to see some of these players winning 100 caps.
"We have some with a chance of doing that if they keep marching on together.
"But Craig made the right decision in calling it a day now, he's been a good servant and the next campaign will be a tough one.
"With Cardiff he's playing here and there which comes to everyone with age.
"It is fitting his last game at home is in Cardiff, I'm sure he'll enjoy the night."
