The result represents somewhat of a recovery from the damaging 3-0 defeat to Welsh rivals Swansea at the weekend, but Solskjaer's men remain deep in the relegation mire, sitting 19th in the table.
However, despite being disappointed not to net all three points, the Norwegian chieftain expressed his delight with his backline, and is looking to build on the solid foundation they bring.
"Caulker and Turner, they did as well as two centre-backs can," Solskjaer told Wales Online.
"Along with David Marshall, that is where we take a lot of encouragement.
"There was a solid foundation and that is what you need to play from.
"Clean sheets are a more vital factor in the situation we are in. That gives you a chance to win games. We created enough chances to win against Aston Villa."
Cardiff will be looking for better from new-signing Wilfried Zaha in the coming weeks after a lacklustre display against Villa.
But Solskjaer is happy with the tricky winger's progress, and is willing to be patient.
"Wilf has had three games for us after having scarcely played all season, in the last six months," Solskjaer added.
"He will benefit from the three hours he has had over those three matches with Cardiff."
