Burgess (pictured) missed The Diamonds 1-0 friendly defeat to Wrexham on Saturday due to the injury, and boss Brian Talbot feared the influential winger would be ruled out when The Diamonds make their league bow in under a month's time.
However, an x-ray revealed the talented 19-year-old is suffering from inflammation within the ball of the foot, ruling him out of action for eight to 10 days.
Mark McKeever looks certain to miss the start of the season after picking up a knee injury in a practice match for Bristol Rovers.
The former Ireland under-21 international will undergo a scan on Tuesday to discover the extend of the damage, but physio Phil Kite suspects the former Sheffield Wednesday ace has suffered medial ligament damage, which would rule him out of Rovers' start to the new campaign.
"I have to say things don't look too good at the moment, but we will have to wait and see what the scan shows," said Kite.
"If there is cartilage damage as well, we could be looking at several weeks out."
Shrewsbury Town keeper Ian Dunbavin is also facing a race against time to be fit for the big kick off after scans revealed the full extent of his injured knee.
Dunbavin is expected to be out of action for four weeks making him a big doubt for The Shrews opening game at Plymouth.
Plymouth, meanwhile, look like ending their interest in winger Mickey Reynolds.
The 27-year-old Ayr winger had been on trial with The Pilgrims, but any hopes he had of a permanent move were scuppered when he had to return home due to a family illness.
He is not expected back at Home Park.
