Kevin Nicholls put the home side ahead just before the hour mark though Richard Johnson levelled matters on his debut from the penalty spot, however Paul Hughes scored his second and settled the game with minutes remaining.
Cheltenham remained rooted at the foot of the table following a 3-3 away draw at Huddersfield, though Bobby Gould will feel aggrieved his side failed to scoop all three points.
The Robins opened a two-goal lead thanks to first-half strikes from Grant McCann and Julian Alsop, though the contest turned on its head in the second half.
Three goals in just five minutes from Kenny Irons and two from top scorer Martin Smith put The Terriers ahead, however McCann netted his second on 71 minutes and rescued a point for the visitors.
A solitary Simon Howarth goal was enough to give Tranmere all three points away to Plymouth, whilst strikes from Keith Ryan, Dannie Bulman and Craig Faulconbridge earned Wycombe a win away to Swindon.
Barnsley boosted their prospects of avoiding the drop following a come-from-behind 2-1 home win over Chesterfield.
Chris Brandon put the visitors ahead though goals from Rory Fallon and Bruce Dyer handed The Tykes the initiative. The Spireites finished with 10 men following the late dismissal of Steve Blatherwick.
