Plymouth are the club interested in signing Port Vale duo Billy Paynter and Sam Collins.Plymouth have confirmed that they are the club interested in signing Port Vale duo Billy Paynter and Sam Collins.
The Pilgrims have not made an offer for the duo, but have confirmed that enquiries have been made.
Port Vale claim that the pair have been the subject of illegal approaches
However, Plymouth chairman Paul Stapleton insists that they have merely made contact with the club.
"I have spoken to Martin Foyle (about Collins and Paynter - pictured), which obviously I was hoping would remain between the two clubs," said Stapleton.
"But I have also made inquiries about lots of players at other clubs.
"We can't buy anyone at the moment because we are outside the transfer window. Everybody knows the rules."
Vale boss Martin Foyle claims that they have actually turned down bids from Plymouth for the pair.
"Some people ask why we don't let them go because we are stopping them from going to a club in a higher division. But I am building my team and where would it leave us if we lost two of our reliable players?" he said.
"It has to be right for Port Vale. We did all right with Steve Brooker, but not with Steve McPhee and Dave Hibbert.
"They are decent lads but have to look after themselves and their own families.
"I do understand their situation, but they won't be going unless the chairman agrees the price."
