Crewe still in talks with Mellor

Crewe manager Steve Davis is still hopeful that influential defender Kelvin Mellor will sign a new contract with the club soon.

The out-of-contract defender has been linked with a move to Derby, although Davis is convinced a move to the Rams at such an early stage of his career would not be in Mellor's best interests. "We are still speaking to Kelvin's advisors. It hasn't been sorted. He had his head turned a bit by interest from Derby. That's come a bit earlier in his development," Davis told the club's official website. Crewe recently made an improved third contract offer to the youngster. The 21-year-old, who is currently on holiday after recovering from an ankle operation during the summer, will decide his future when he arrives back at Gresty Road. "Giving him a one-year deal (last summer) was like an incentive. It was a bit of a kick up the backside in a way to make sure he starts the season the way he finished it. I told him if he gets in the team and does well - there's your longer deal," Davis said. "I can see Kelvin's side of it. He's not wrong and we're not either so we have to compromise a bit."
