Forest had said that they had turned down loan bids from The Foxes and Crystal Palace for John, but Bassett denies making any move.
"No, there's nothing in that one," Bassett told planetfootball.com.
"I have not made any offer for him, that is just another one of the number of players that we are being linked with."
The 25-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international was also reported to be the subject of a loan bid from Selhurst Park.
Forest are not willing to let their 14-goal man leave The City Ground, but they may be forced to sell soon as his contract with the club expires in the summer.
Bassett said that he was faxed details of Ivory Coast striker Elie Kroupi by an agent, but he has not yet seen the Lorient star in action.
"I received a fax about him from an agent, one of a number of faxes I get on players every day.
"I have not expressed an interest in him, and besides that I've got no money to buy anyone."
Leicester have struggled with scoring goals this season, but the financial situation means that Bassett cannot afford to bring in the players he would like.
