The 22-year-old Butterfield, who had begun pre-season training with Cardiff City earlier this week, travelled to Selhurst Park on Thursday to discuss terms.
The full back passed a medical and put pen-to-paper on Friday, which brought an end to his five-year association with Grimsby.
Better news for The Mariners was that Terry Cooke had agreed a new contract.
The former Manchester City star spent the latter part of last season on a short-term contract at Blundell Park and he has now agreed a longer term deal with manager Paul Groves.
"We have already seen enough of Terry to know how capable he is, and we are delighted that he has agreed to come back to Blundell Park," said Groves.
"He has the pedigree and class that we need for success in Division One."
