Dougie takes top player gong

CRYSTAL PALACE hit-man Dougie Freedman has claimed the First Division Player of the Month award for August.

The Scotland international has enjoyed a prolific start to the season having netted five goals to help the Eagles into fifth place and progress to the second round of the Carling Cup.

Freedman bagged a hat-trick in Palace's remarkable 3-2 win over Burnley, (Palace finished the game with nine men), on the opening day of the season, and followed up the feat with strikes against Torquay and Wimbledon.

"Dougie Freedman's goals and consistent performances have been a major part of Crystal Palace's start to the season," the awards' judging panel commented.

"He is an intelligent player who creates goals as well as scoring them.

"He has the little bit extra all strikers need to create openings out of nothing."

Swindon's Tommy Mooney won the Division Two award after notching six goals in an impressive start to his County Ground career, while Lee Trundle of Swansea claimed the accolade for Division Three after his six strikes took the Swans second in the table.
