Darren Ward sent Palace on their way with the opener on 14 minutes when converting from close-range.
Coventry hit back and drew level just before half time with Matt Heath nodding home.
There was still time left in the first half for Clinton Morrison to restore Palace's lead with a fine header.
Ben Watson gave Palace a two-goal cushion with his side's third goal just before hour mark to claim his first goal of the season.
Things got worse for Coventry eight minutes from time when Claus Jorgensen was sent off for a professional foul.
The home side's misery was completed in the dying second when Jon Macken netted from Andy Johnson's cross.
