Teenage goalkeeper Lewis Price made his debut for Town but had to pick the ball out of his net just eight minutes in, after John Hills had scored from the penalty spot following a foul by Matt Elliott on Patrick Agyemang inside the box.
Dutch midfielder Martijn Reuser was brough off the bench ten minutes into the second half, and made almost an immediate impact by grabbing the equaliser.
Reuser made it 1-1 by curling in a superb 25-yard free kick past Steve Banks after Ian Cox had fouled Darren Bent on 62 minutes.
Reuser was also instrumental in the winner for the visitors, which came just five minutes later, as he crossed for Bent to slot in his 15th goal of the season at the far post.
Joe Royle's men move up into fourth place in the table and still well in contention for a play-off place.
Andy Hessenthaler's side move in the opposite direction, and worryingly slipped into the final relegation place as a result of Derby's thumping 5-1 win over Preston at Pride Park.
