The Championship side's leading goalscorer damaged knee ligaments against Blackpool last weekend and they will need to discover added firepower if they want to sneak into the play-offs.
Ahead of Saturday's trip to leaders Leicester, McCarthy told the club's official website: "It's devastating for Didz himself because he's had a fantastic season.
"It's obviously a big blow for the team as well but we have to get on with it.
These are the trials and tribulations you get as a manager, as a coach.
"Someone else has to step up to the plate now and become a hero."
There is the possibility Town could bring in another striker on loan, but they already have Daryl Murphy, Paul Taylor, Frank Nouble and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake on their books.
And McCarthy added: "The loan option is there but how can you have a squad of players and when you get an injury, go out and try and bring someone else in.
"I don't think that is right. I want to give those players the encouragement to go out and play and that is what I will do."
