Sean Dyche was pleased with the performance of his side as Burnley hit 40 points with a 2-1 win against Everton in the Premier League.

The points tally is often given as the benchmark for safety in England's top flight, and it took the Clarets the entire season to pick up the same number of points last term.

But after a superb season so far, Dyche praised the work of his side for getting there with nine games still to play, with Burnley now just five points behind Arsenal in sixth place.

"Now we're on 40 points, it took us the whole of last season to get that and now we've got nine to go. I think it's a real marker of how far we've come in a relatively short space of time," he told Sky Sports.

Burnley 2-1 Everton

"We're constantly looking for ways to move the club and the team forward season-on-season and there are good signs of that. We want to go again of course and go beyond 40 but it is a fine mark for a club like us at this stage of the season."

Burnley came from 1-0 for the first time in the Premier League under Sean Dyche to beat Everton, with Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood netting for the home side.

Being behind at half-time inspired Dyche for his team talk, and believes his side deserved to pick up all three points at Turf Moor.

"We haven't turned a 1-0 deficit around and I told the players they have the freedom because everyone expects you to not turn it around so what difference does it make?

"The worse that can happen is they win and everyone says 'well you can't turn a result around' and now everyone will say we can.

"It's better for the team. They've been close so many times at this level to turning deficits into winning performances and it has not always gone our way.

"Today it has and we deserved it. There was no luck involved, we worked for it so I'm very pleased for the players. I thought it was a very thorough performance."
