The Clarets pulled four points clear of the drop zone after Robbie Blake (pictured) scored from the penalty spot in the second half at The Bescot Stadium.
Paul Merson forced Burnley keeper Brian Jensen into a save with a shot from the edge of the box while Blake twice threatened with two chances of his own.
Glen Little, Tony Grant and Neil Wood all came close with further chances, as the visitors looked the better side going into half time.
The match was decided on 56 minutes when former Chelsea and Celtic man Craig Burley brought down Wood in the box handing The Clarets a spot-kick.
Blake stepped up to slam home his penalty and give Stan Ternent's side a valuable three points towards their survival in Division One.
