The Millers were desperate for the points and the victory ensured they stayed up, but with Walsall's defeat to Crystal Palace visitors Burnley are also now safe from the drop.
The convincing scoreline flattered the hosts, who opened the scoring just quarter of an hour in when Martin Butler latched on to man-of-the match Michael Proctor's through-ball and slotted past the onrushing Brian Jensen.
Proctor then provided the second with a slide-rule pass for Robbie Stockdale, who also took full advantage.
Robbie Blake was looking dangerous in Burnley's better spells but two became three when Graham Branch was adjudged to have handled in the box.
Proctor was given the chance to cap his fine performance with a goal from the spot, and he made no error - slotting home to the delight of the Rotherham faithful.
