The 30-year-old has opted to train with the League Two club following a recent spell with Bristol City.
Grant has struggled to find a new club since leaving The Clarets at the end of last season.
The former Everton and Manchester City man will hope to impress Blues boss Keith Curle after failed summer trials with Oldham Athletic, Derby County and Stoke City.
One player that failed to impress Curle is former Oldham striker Rodney Jack following a recent trial.
Meanwhile, Chester midfielder Ben Davies looks set to sign a two-year extension to his existing contract, while chairman Stephan Vaughan has made arrangements with both the Inland Revenue and Chester City Council regarding outstanding payments of a tax bill and rent on their current ground.
The club have also had their transfer embargo lifted after settling outstanding payments with The Professional Footballers' Association this week.
