The 21-year-old picked up the injury in the 2-0 away victory at Reading two weeks ago and after having a screw inserted into his fifth metatarsal bone, Russell will now have to spend three months on the sidelines and not the initial six weeks as first diagnosed.
The injury to Russell is a blow to Canaries boss Nigel Worthington as the youngster had come in to replace fellow midfielders Mark Rivers and Alex Notman, who are also out with injuries of their own.
Worthington has responded to the losses in midfield by taking Nicky Southall on loan from Bolton Wanderers as cover.
On the foot injury to Russell, Worthington told the Eastern Daily Press: "Darel's a little bit down at the moment and he's entitled to be.
"He came in against Ipswich and Reading and did a good job for us and all of a sudden he's picked up an injury without any contact.
"We are all disappointed for him, but we'll do our best to keep his spirits up and ensure he's still very much involved."
