Hughton went into Sunday's contest with Stoke having overseen just one win from five games this season, with reports suggesting a defeat at the Britannia could cost him his job.
The Canaries went on to claim a 1-0 win but Pilkington insists the former Newcastle boss' future should never have been called into question.
"It's crazy," the 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international said of speculation Hughton could be facing the axe.
"I wrote on Twitter asking if it was too early for Paolo Di Canio (the former Sunderland manager, who was sacked on 22 September) to go, given we're only five or six games into the season.
"We have brought a lot of new players in and it takes time for them to gel. But you have seen (at Stoke) what we can do."
Pilkington provided the assist for Jonny Howson's match-winning goal in the first half and admitted he was determined to make his mark this term after returning to full fitness.
"I've not been in the team recently," he added. "I've had to wait for my chance. I had a few niggles in pre-season but I'm over that now, and hopefully I can keep my place."
