Gary Hooper and Leroy Fer earned them a valuable win at The Hawthorns to help them leapfrog their opponents into 14th position in the Premier League table.

Hooper scored the opener in the 13th minute, drilling an unstoppable drive into the net, before Dutch ace Fer finished off a sharp counter late on to seal all three points.

The result was greeted gleefully by Hughton, who could not have asked for much more from is players.

"It hurt the lads in midweek," Hughton told Sky Sports. "We were nowhere near good enough and that's the second time on the back of a poor performance that the lads have shown character and come back from that one.

"I thought we did it in the ideal way too. We had to be solid against a very good team that have very good offensive options. We changed the shape of the team today because we felt we could capitalise on the break.

"I thought we showed more than that and if we showed a little bit more composure at times in the first-half, I think we could have scored (more than once).

"I decided to go with the same back four that got a clean sheet the week before, but we have players that are really desperate to play and players that are putting pressure on me with regards to selection.

"It's always a judgement call and you just hope that judgement call comes up."
