Coventry City defender Tom Davies faces a ban after being charged with violent conduct following Saturday's 1-1 draw with Notts County.
The 26-year-old appeared to tread on Magpies defender Richard Duffy's leg in the 21st minute of the League Two play-off semi-final first leg.
It was not seen by the match officials but caught on video. Davies has until 6pm on Tuesday May 15 to respond.
The incident has been referred to a panel of three former elite match officials and each official will review the footage independently to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence.
For a charge to follow, the decision must be unanimous.
Davies could face a three-match ban if the panel decide the offence was worthy of a straight red for violent conduct.
That would mean Davies being suspended for Friday's play-off semi-final second leg at Meadow Lane and the final at Wembley should Coventry progress.
Coventry City captain Michael Doyle said after Saturday's game: "It's just heat of the moment stuff. Tom is a whole-hearted player and hopefully nothing will come of it. Hopefully anyway."
