The Millers have now won their last three homes games in-a-row, which will be a major boost for manager Ronnie Moore.
Rotherham took the lead after just 15 minutes with a fine move which cut Coventry open.
Carl Robinson was the man who created the opener with a pass through the Sky Blues defence which was latched onto by Darren Byfield and he finished clinically past Gavin Ward.
The second and vital goal came just before half time when young defender Shaun Barker grabbed his first goal for the club.
It came from a Paul Warne corner and he headed home to double his side's lead.
Coventry came out in the second half looking for a goal to get them back into the game, but they could not find a way through a well-marshalled Rotherham back-line.
