The Whites had failed to claim a three-point haul following their opening day success over Derby County.
The Sky Blues started the better of the sides and Clarke Carlisle's opener from Jermaine Wright's free-kick came against the run of play.
Julian Joachim should of made it two just seconds later, but fluffed his chance from close-range.
The former Coventry striker did open his account for his new club on 71 minutes after firing home Wright's rebound.
City were dead and buried moments later when Louis Carey was dismissed for collecting two yellow cards.
There was still time for Danny Pugh to score his second of the season with Leeds' third in injury time.
