Monday night's clash at The Withdean Stadium saw two of the favourites for the Division Two title put their credentials to the test.
Forbes disgraceful reaction to a Kerry Mayo challenge, which saw the QPR ace headbutt the opposing player, earned him a red card with the game poised at 1-1.
Down to ten men, QPR could not shackle lively on-loan Chelsea man Knight, who latched onto a ball as it floated over Danny Shittu to poke home the winner.
The first half had seen Rangers take the lead when Gino Padula's wickedly curling free-kick evaded everyone, including keeper Ben Roberts, to find the back of the net.
Brighton were soon level, however, with the diminutive Knight taking his tally to three headed goals in two games after a superb cross from Gary Hart.
Rangers' Kevin McLeod had sealed an interim loan deal to play in the match, with a permanent move expected this week, and he showed his ability with a pacey burst through that saw him round the goalkeeper but not have room to shoot home.
A poor night for Rangers got even worse when defender Clarke Carlisle picked up a knee injury and was stretchered off the pitch in visible pain.
