Elvis Hammond had cancelled out Marc Nygaard's opener, but the hosts were stunned when Furlong hammered home a winner four minutes from time before being sent off for his second booking.
It was the second dismissal of the match with Alan Maybury of Leicester sent off just twenty minutes in.
That was after QPR had taken the lead, with Nygaard nodding home after Lee Cook's quality cross.
Maybury was dismissed soon afterwards after bringing down Furlong, and adjudged to have committed a professional foul.
Simon Royce had to be at his best to deny Mark de Vries as The Foxes looked to level and it was the same player that nodded through for Hammond to equalise after the break.
With the match looking destined to end in a draw, Rangers got a winner when Furlong took advantage of a mix-up in the home defence to slot home and claim victory.
