Julio Cesar's own goal cancelled out Junior Hoilett's early deflected opener for QPR, but Everton had to dig deep after they had Steven Pienaar sent off in the 61st minute, with QPR appealing in vain for a penalty for a foul on Hoilett.
Hughes said: "I think it's an important point, but ideally we would have preferred to take the maximum because I feel our performance warranted that.
"Overall I thought some of our play was excellent today, in the first half I thought we created some good movement, a stonewall penalty cancelled out.
"The referee was only about four yards away from it so why he hasn't given it I don't know.
"The goal we conceded was due to not picking up from a set play and we need to do better than that."
