Leicester defender Gareth McAuley has received a late call-up to the Northern Ireland squad to face Sweden

Defender in the squad for crucial Euro 2008 qualifier

Just days after revealing he may quit international football, defender Gareth McAuley has received a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad. McAuley, who plays for Leicester and has won five caps, was considering his international future after being snubbed for Northern Ireland's first-team squad. But he could now play in their crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden in Stockholm on 17th October after receiving a late call-up from head coach Nigel Worthington, who originally named him on the stand-by list. His return to the squad comes after he produced a fine performance and scored for Leicester against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Northern Ireland currently lie in third place in Group F, three points behind their Sweden. They will be looking to reverse a two-game losing run on their travels after recent defeats to Iceland and Latvia have put their qualification prospects in doubt.
