The former Sunderland trainee suffered the injury in The Tykes' 2-2 draw with Hartlepool United at Oakwell last Saturday - a match in which Lumsdon was dismissed in first half stoppage time for using an alleged elbow on Pools winger Chris Shuker.
The 24-year-old is likely to miss the next six weeks with the knee problem and manager Gudjon Thordarson has revealed that he will look to bring in a new face to bolster his midfield in Lumsdon's absence.
"I was going to substitute him before he got sent off because he was struggling," Thordarson told the club's official website.
"He has damaged ligaments on the outside of his right knee.
"I'll now have to look at bringing in a replacement because we were down to the bare bones on Saturday.
"There are not many options, but I have a couple of players in mind. We'll wait and see what happens."
