The 30-year-old spent most of last season on loan at Stockport from Hibernian - but he is now set to depart Easter Road for Oakwell.
"I've had talks with Barnsley's chairman, Peter Ridsdale, and manager Paul Hart and we are very close to an agreement," Colgan - who had been in talks with Kilmarnock - told the Edinburgh Evening News.
"Everything seems to be being handled in a very professional manner.
"I'll be driving down there on Sunday and having a look round on Monday before possibly having a medical if both parties are happy.
"Everything is pretty much tied up. I've had phone calls from other people but people I've spoken to tell me Barnsley's training ground is unbelievable, the envy of many Premiership teams, and that the club will be really going for promotion this coming season."
