Southend United went top on Friday night as Nottingham Forest crashed at home.
Nottingham Forest slumped to defeat on Friday, losing 2-0 to Barnsley at The City Ground.
The visitors thoroughly deserved the win, although their opening goal did come completely against the run of play with 15 minutes on the clock.
Paul Hayes nicked the ball forward to Marc Richards just inside the Forest half, allowing him to dart forward before cleverly forcing Forest keeper Paul Gerrard to commit himself and clipping the ball over him and into an empty net.
On 31 minutes the lead was doubled when Richards grabbed his second of the game. The former Northampton man dispossessed Wes Morgan on the halfway line and shrugged off his challenge as he attempted a recovering tackle.
He then struck a magnificent right-footed shot which curled around a watching Gerrard before dipping into the top left-hand corner of his goal. Nathan Tyson was sent off for a second yellow card in the closing stages to complete a night of misery for Gary Megson.
In the evening's other game, Swindon made an unhappy start to life without striker Rory Fallon, going down to a 2-0 defeat at Southend.
Luke Guttridge has attracted attention from a variety of clubs recently, and he will have done his chances of a move away from Roots Hall no harm whatsoever by opening the scoring after 31 minutes.
Before The Robins had been given time to regroup, they found themselves two goals down within the space of two minutes. Shrimpers midfielder Mark Gower (pictured) made the points safe on 32 minutes, sending Steve Tilson's men top of the table in the process.
